Laser Hair Removal

What is Laser Hair Removal?

Laser Hair Removal or Permanent Hair reduction is a medical procedure that uses a concentrated beam of light aka laser to eliminate unwanted hair. A Laser emits a light that is absorbed by hair pigment – melanin – in the hair without damage to the skin. The energy of light is converted into heat, which is directed at hair follicles, which delays future hair growth.

Hair growth cycle happens in three stages:

  • Growth aka Anagen
  • Transition aka Catagen
  • Rest aka Telogen

The most effective when the laser removal happens during Anagen, which last from 2-3 weeks, as this is when the hair is most available to absorb the laser energy down to follicle. During Catagen phase, the hair starts the process of shedding and Telogen when the heat from laser can no longer travel all the way from the hair to its follicle.

Laser is successfully used on all skin types and hair color, although it works the fastest and most effectively on people with light skin and dark hair due to the contrast between the two.

What Can I Expect After Laser Hair Removal?

Laser Hair Removal effectively delays the hair growth for extended periods of time; however, it does not get rid of hair permanently. Six consistent treatments minimum are required in order to properly reduce hair growth, as well as maintenance treatments after the initial six.

You can expect temporary redness, slight discomfort which disappear within few hours.

What Type of Home Care Should I Use After Laser Hair Removal?

  • Avoid sunlight in the treated areas
  • Don’t use tanning bed for 6-8 weeks or as directed by your esthetician
  • Use broad-spectrum high-level SPF and reapply every 2 hours

Trimming and shaving is recommended the day before your laser hair treatment. Make sure to avoid other hair removal methods: plucking, waxing and electrolysis at least four weeks prior.
